Western Metals Recycling LLC (WMR) just moved to a new 53 acre site at 1776 S Colorado Ave. in Provo, Utah. The former Provo site was located on 2 ½ acres at 685 South Freedom Boulevard. The move from South Freedom makes way for the Utah Transit Authority and its Trax, FrontRunner and bus intermodal hub and parking lot to be completed in 2012, utilizing the former WMR processing site.
Originally known as the Provo Hide and Fur Company, the South Freedom site was developed prior to WWII. It has since passed through several different owners, and is has operated as WMR since 1996.
WMR is headquartered in Salt Lake City and has nearly 250 employees. WMR has 7 processing facilities. The Provo yard offers state-of-the-art customer service technology, and its processing activities include shearing, baling, crushing, sorting ferrous and nonferrous scrap. WMR is also on the cusp of opening an eighth yard – – in Albuquerque – – within the next month. The expanded plans are consistent with The David J. Joseph Company strategy of strengthening its existing footprint in the scrap processing industry.
The Provo scrap yard buys common household ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal items like appliances, gutters, sheet metal, automobiles, aluminum cans and other aluminum, copper and brass products. Customers are paid on site for their scrap metal. The yard is a venue for residents to make money while recycling, rather than having to pay a waste management fee for disposal at a local landfill. It is an easy way for community members to make money, while helping to preserve and protect the environment.
WMR is wholly owned by The David J. Joseph Company (DJJ), a subsidiary of Nucor Corporation (NYSE: NUE). Founded in 1885, The David Joseph Company is one of the largest scrap brokers/processors in the United States and is celebrating 125 years of excellence in scrap brokerage, processing and transportation services. Nucor and affiliates are manufacturers of steel products, with operating facilities primarily in the U.S. and Canada. Nucor is the leading purchaser of ferrous scrap and the largest steel producer and recycler in North America.
